Andreas Grimm is happy to announce the exhibition March, Friday or Saturday of new works by Matias Becker at his Munich gallery (formerly Grimm|Rosenfeld), opening September 13 through October 20, 2007.
Matias Becker, best known for his large charcoal drawings, has created new works for his exhibition March, Friday or Saturday at Andreas Grimm Munich. Becker’s recent work includes collages and silk-screen prints with six different motives. In addition there will be a video installation on view in the downstairs space of the gallery.
Becker’s collages are artistic fragments of medial reality, interwoven in dense braids which go beyond the scope of conventionality. By using various picture fragments and styles they also function as pastiches. The motives of his collages and silk screens contain doublings, which appear in all of his works ?" both as isolated motives or wallpaper patterns in other settings. The elements Becker chooses for his paintings are context related and isolated ?" he chooses them after the narrative context. Photos of musicals are combined with images from the National Geographic or imagery of hippie gas stations added to the interior of Nemo’s Nautilus, illustrating various historical constructions and utopical concepts.
By using de-contextualization and recombination techniques the images become detached from their original meaning. Re-combined to new compositions the pictures offer a variety of new meanings. The used doublings refer to a subtext, which resembles a scientific analysis but could also function as an artistic quotation and organizer of the used pictures - the different elements overleap and combine the pictures or image parts.
The virtual analytic arrangements of the configurations, which Becker contrasts with flowery motives, generate an odd but direct humor. Once drawn into his complex collages, the viewer constantly discovers new narratives with ever changing pointers.
The installation in the downstairs space consist of a stage and laminated strip lights. In the center of the room Becker’s video shows a - rather ironic ?" set of pioneers performing adventurous acts. Striped lights, which also appear as requisites in the video, surround the stage.
The gallery hours are Thursday - Friday 11 am to 7 pm, Saturday 11 am to 2 pm. During the OPEN ART MÜNCHEN the gallery will be open on Friday 11 am to 9 pm, Saturday and Sunday 11 am to 8 pm.
