Andreas Grimm New York is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by London-born artist Terry Haggerty.
Haggerty is known for his precise paintings of alternating light and dark colored lines that hint at everyday objects-air vents, files, grills. What makes these works so intriguing is the way Haggerty warps and bends the stripes to create multiple visual reactions. Stacks of vertical and horizontal lines seemingly disappear from view at the edges of his paintings and at junctions on the surface, creating a duality where what is perceived initially in the motif becomes something more, the illusion of a three-dimensional object.
Haggerty's precise paintings are created through a process involving multiple layers of paint and varnish that render the material canvas surface immaculate, obscuring any record of brush strokes and leaving the surface strangely smooth.
In his new work, Haggerty's familiar lined motif remains, but the simple, stacked vertical and horizontal alignments are replaced with staggeringly dynamic shapes, graceful yet almost geologic in nature. The skewed forms suggest fault lines, the movement of tectonic plates, and uplift. While previous paintings revealed objects within perceived flatness, Haggerty's recent works have a greater sense of volume. Sudden kinks open up positive and negative space at the same time, creating two seemingly contradictory forms at once that are balanced by subtle, monochromatic backgrounds. As soon as the viewer locks onto one way of looking at the composition, it flips and becomes a new form.
Terry Haggerty's most recent installation was developed for the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. He lives and works in New York.
TERRY HAGGERTY will be on view through April 30th, 2008. Please contact Ashley Ludwig for further information and images: +212-352-2388 or ashley@andreasgrimmgallery.com
