Damien Cadio: Goodbye Victoire
26 October 2006 - 20 December 2006

Andreas Grimm and Adrian Rosenfeld are pleased to announce the opening of “Goodbye Victoire”, the first exhibition in Munich of Berlin-based painter Damien Cadio. The exhibition features works on canvas, panel, and canvas on panel from the last two years as well as a recent single channel video.

Cadio’s subjects are fragile and enigmatic – there are fingers ending with bird’s heads, a wounded puppet, a mysterious masked man, teenagers and other compromised characters. The work elaborates a certain subtle danger, neither explicit nor violent, but embedded in the lexicon of contemporary mythology.

Cadio favors compositions that might pop up in everyday life, or rather everyday dreams. There is something simultaneously off, and easily recognizable in his paintings. Reminiscent of antique miniature paintings or snapshots, many of the pictures in this exhibition are smaller in scale. Cadio’s deceptively loose technique and dark low-contrast palette emphasizes the strangeness of the quotidian; on the shadowy stage of these paintings transformations occur. A group of kids changes to clerical procession; bubble gum on a fingertip becomes an embryo.

Damien Cadio is invested in human relationships, ambiguity, and the psychological drama of the everyday. His mysterious and often moving paintings hover between humor and pathos, night and day. Cadio exploits the multi-valent quality of his work in its installation: the narrative breaks down only to grow back again, more strangely.

Damien Cadio was born in France in 1975. He studied in Rouen and Paris, and since 2004 has lived and worked in Berlin.

The exhibition is on view through December 20, 2006. Please contact the gallery for further information and images at info@grimmrosenfeld.com or +49 89 38859240.
